Law Squared Appoints Toll Group’s Molly Liskazer to Lead its Fixed-fee Litigation Practice

Law Squared has appointed Molly Liskazer, former Senior Legal Counsel, Litigation and Global Head of Insurance at Toll Group, as Head of Disputes + Litigation. Liskazer joined last week to lead a national practice that has grown from four people to 15 in the past year. The practice acts for Australian and UK insurers, energy and utility retailers, financiers and large corporates in every Australian jurisdiction.

Law Squared’s Disputes + Litigation practice has more than tripled in 12 months as insurers, energy and utility retailers and major corporates move high-volume and complex litigation onto its fixed-stage fee model.

The growth has been driven by a pricing model few firms have been willing to apply to litigation. Every stage of a dispute carries a fixed fee, set by the value of the claim and agreed before work starts. From letter of demand through pleadings, discovery, mediation and hearing to judgment and enforcement, clients pay only for the stages a matter reaches. Law Squared has worked this way since it was founded in 2016 and it is consistent with its practice of not recording time, either to bill clients or to measure the performance of its lawyers.

For organisations that litigate as a regular part of doing business, that changes how disputes are run. Claims and legal teams know their maximum legal cost exposure from the outset, so strategy can be decided on the numbers. Budgets can be set across a whole portfolio rather than reforecast file by file, and fixed fees give a clean benchmark against other firms on the panel.

The pricing is paired with rigorous reporting: every matter sits in a structured record of stage, quantum, cost and outcome. For recovery and claims clients, the measure that matters most is the ratio of legal cost to the amount being pursued. Law Squared tracks it on every file and across each client’s portfolio, and reports it monthly alongside recovery rates and time to recovery. Because fees are scaled to claim value, a file where the cost would outweigh the likely return is flagged before the money is spent.

“Litigation is where the billable hour does the most damage,” said Law Squared CEO Claire Sundin. “Without clear visibility of cost, clients ration advice, delay decisions and settle just to stop the meter running. We’ve spent ten years showing that litigation can be priced like any other professional service, on high-volume work and complex disputes alike. Our clients now run litigation the way they run the rest of their business, with a known cost and a measurable return.”

At Toll Group, one of Australia’s largest transport and logistics businesses, Liskazer spent five years responsible for both national and international litigation and insurance claims, leading the a national team across litigation, insurance and risk. She was named Rising Star (In-House) at the 2022 Australian Law Awards and was a finalist for ANZIIF Young Insurance Professional of the Year in 2024.

“I’ve been the client, managing litigation inside a major corporate,” said Liskazer. “What in-house teams want is certainty about what a dispute will cost, what it is likely to return, and a firm that reports on both. Law Squared has built its practice around that. My job is to take it into larger and more complex matters without losing the human side of how we work.”

“Molly brings the view from the other side of the table,” Sundin said. “She knows exactly what a major corporate expects from its external lawyers, and she’s a people-first leader. As the team grows, that’s what keeps our client experience consistent.”

Liskazer leads the practice with three newly appointed Team Leads: Melanie Skinner, Gino Joseph and Natalie Markovski.

The practice’s growth has been accelerated by Tetra Claims, Squared Group’s delegated claims administrator, which operates from Melbourne and London. Together, the two businesses offer insurers and corporate clients one team from first notification of loss through claims handling, recoveries and litigation, with fixed pricing at every step. Liskazer’s experience managing a major corporate’s insurance portfolio adds the policyholder’s perspective that sits behind most commercial claims.
